White. White to play; what result? PROBLEM 4213. By D. A. Buddie, Dunedin. Black.

White. White to play; what result? For the best correct solutions to the above pair of problems Mr Brodie will give the latest edition of Lees' Guide. Solutions to be in by August 14. TO. CORRESPONDENTS. A. D., Tuturau.—Will forward. Your remarks on column appreciated. A. D. S„ Waimate.—Thanks for problems; the notes on the “trick” would no doubt be useful. Will refer to your query later. Your solution to Problem 4210 is correct, and your play on No. 4211 appears right, but will examine more closely. Author's play allows a Black win. D. A. 8., Dunedin. —Received in time. Thanks. W. H. H., Waipahi.—Problem 4209 was withdrawn last issue, the terms being wrong. It is a White win. In No. 4210 you are correct for 13 moves, then you play weak for Black, and your next move allows a draw. • You are on the right track. A. E. J., Crookston. —Pleased to hear from you, and hope you will continue. Problem 4209 is a White win by 30 26. Can you work it out. D. 8., Tapanui. —You are correct in solutions to Problems 4207, 4208, and 4210. No. 4209 is a White win by 30 26 “Alister,” Pareora. —Your play on Problem 4210 is correct. No. 4209 was withdrawn. G. F. M., Green Island.—Welcome back. You are correct in play and remarks on No 4209, although you had written before last week’s announcement ton it. GAMES. We have received the following games from Mr Darling through Mr D. A. Brodie. They were played in the States last May: Game 3242. — “ Cross.” Black; A. Jordan. White: Darlinsr.

Messrs Winclomni.li and Spiehnan. The notes are by Professor Hartshorn. Game 321.).—” Denny.”

White wins. (a) Considered the only tenable line. Horr played 3 7 against Feme, but should have lost. (b) 23 18 is inferior to the text. (c) 1 8 at this stage loses. (Dl The play to this point is all forced, and proves the Black side of this opening to be so weak that a draw is obtained only by tho narrowest margin.—Pittsburg Leader. DRAUGHTS ITEMS. Otago Club.—The club is in a flourishing ow'.diiion just now, everyone being keen on play. Last Saturday evening there was a good attendance, a number of boards being engaged in tournament play. Visitors are welcome at the club, which is in the Y.M.C.A. Rooms, Moray place, and meets Wednesday and Saturday evenings. A. Jordan.—ln looking over a copy of the Pomeroy v. Jordan match games book we note a short biography of the two contestants. Speaking of Jordan it says: —‘Tn Australia his score was Jordan 2621, all others 17, drawn 717; the list including Boreham, Champion ci Australia, whom he decisively defeated in a match.” Jordan did not play a match with Boreham or anyone else in New Zealand, practically all the games being played in tho crowd, which is not conducive to the best results. The Dunedin players were not prepared as for a match, and Jordan was largely used for experimental purposes. Boreham, it is true, was six or seven games down in over 30 pla\ - ed, but there was no match. A Generous Loan.—Mr A. Robbie, Isla Bunk, Southland, some months ago received quite a fine library of draughts, works which he had purchased. Mr Boreham estimates the cost of the books' as worth about £3O, and the collection includes a lot of uncommon works. Mr Robbie very generously handed over the books to Mr J. A. Boreham at Easter to take to Dunedin and use them for the benefit of players here. Mr Robbie gets nothing out of his loan but the satisfaction of helping on the game; and on behalf of the local player’s we warmly thank him for his generosity. Mr Robbie is an old correspondent of this column.
