Northern may add two more names to their roll of honour. R. Shepherd is visiting his homo’ prior to entering the camp at Trentham. The Australian mail brings a letter from the military camp at Liverpool, N.S.W., from R. Sims, who sends a photograph superscribed “To my old club member, ‘Left Wing,’ with best wishes to the old club.” The writer, who for some time has been trainer with a team of American boxers —amongst them .Frank Loughney, Jeff Smith, Coffey, and Hardwick—expects to leave for the front about the end of July. He inquires the address of an old club mate, H. llatley. If friend Ratley should still maintain an acquaintance with this column perhaps he will communicate with Sims at the camp address. My corre-
spondent inquires also the address of Mr Esquilant, photographer. It is Dowling street, Dunedin. A. Dobson, remembered as a member of Roslyn Club, and one of tho best backs ever produced in the town, has volunteered for active service. W. Rae, a member of Old Club, with a seat on the O.F.A. Executive, is amongst the wounded with the New Zealand Expeditionary Forces. SATURDAY’S MATCHES. SENIOR. Northern v. High School Old Bots. The turf at tho Caledonian Ground was to good order for tho Northern-Old Boys fixture. Mr Brown was referee. The first spell was productive of fast play and Interesting passing bouts. Old Boys showed up a little better than their opponents, but, by poor shooting, lost a couple of good chances. Abernethy opened the scoring for Northern, following on good play by Campbell. Old Boys'retaliated, and a good centre by Hey was placed through by Allen. A second goal to Northern came as the result of tricky play by Hey, Campbell netting from the centre. Old Boys were not to be denied, and brisk passing by the forvfards ended in Thomas beating Black. At half time Old Boys had a load of 3 goals to 2, Rostieaux scoring from a free kick against Harrison, for dangerous play. The second spell commenced with Northern taking the aggressive. Old Boys gradually improved matters, but steady tackling by Shepherd (left back) saved Northern. Campbell equalised tho scores from a penalty. Thomas missed a fine chance to enhance Old Boys’ score, but later on Allen beat Northerns’ goal-keeper from a centre by Hey. The referee, however, to the surprise of most, reversed his decision after consultation with the line umpire, who was now seen with the red flag up. Old Boys’ attacks met with no success; and a couple of characteristic dashes by Northern gave them a couple of goals, Abernethy scoring one and Hey tho other. Few spectators witnessed the game, which was hotly contested throughout. Scores: Northern 5 goals. High School Old Boys ... 3 goals. Mornington v. Southern. This match was played at Mornington, which was in good condition although hard. Southern, playing down hill, assumed the aggressive, and a fine centre by Knights produced material result. Mornington quickly evened, Logie being the scorer, and later M'Faull added another from a free kick. Slow and scrambling play followed till half time, when the scores stood: Mornington. 2; Southern, 1. Tire second spell opened with a long period of tedious play, in which neither side, could claim to have the advantage. With seven minutes to go Mornington’s score was increased from a solo effort by Young. Mornington continued the offensive, and Booker added another goal with a nice screw kick, and later Holland finished off a partially saved shot from M'Faull. Time was then called, with the score t Mornington 6 goals. Southern 1 goal. Green Island v. Ravensbourne. Ravensbourne mustered on}y eight . men for their gam© with Green Island, played on Culling Park. Offside play and poor shooting by the Green Island forwards often nullified their efforts.
