FAR EASTERN OLYMPIC GAMES

There is a curious interest in the Far Eastern Olympic Games which took place at Shanghai (China.) last month, when the majority of the Western nations are involved in the greatest war in history. The crowds which witnessed the games were phenomenal, the average daily attendance being estimated at 20,000. and, when the finals were decided, 30,000. When the Chines' 1 football team equalised the _ final game by scoring a goal just five minutes before the referee’s whistle blew for the finish, the Chinese thus winning the series, the crowd of 20,000 rushed pell-mell on the field shouting and cheering and capering like madmen. The players were lifted shoulder high, and a shower of hats went up in the air. hundreds of them being left indiscriminately on the field when the officials at length managed to clear the grounds and have the play resumed. . The hero of the games and the individual star of the Olynmic meet was Saavedra. 13v winning the Decathlon with 711 nomts against his nearest competitor’s 642 (D. b. Lee a Chinaman) Saavedra secured a magnificent 2000dol trophy donated by President Yuan Shi Kai of. the Republic of China.
