The late Mr Norman M'Laren, who died at Nelson oil the 7th hist., was formerly a well-known and greatly-respected resident of the Otautau district. Since ho went to Nelson he has been greatly interested in the fruit-growing developments of the Tasman district, where ho had an orchard of 20 acres of two-year-old trees within ICO yards of the shores of Tasman Bay and also of the Moutere Inlet, where he had hoped eventually to make his home. Trooper P. Batty, of the Canterbury Mounted, was born at Orari, and was 23 years of age. He took to farm and general country work. A keen footballer, he played in representative matches in Wellington and Nelson, and also took part in club football in Geraldine* South Canterbury.
