The Makarewa, Oroti, and Jacob’s Rivers were in high flood on Friday (says the (Southland Times). A fata] accident occurred ah Turamoe about 3.30 o’clock on Wednesday afternoon (says the Hawke’s Bay Herald). A married man named Robert Milne, residing in Queen street, Hastings, was employed with three mates on a stumping contract. While a stump was being removed an iron bar by which the machine need in the operation was fastened to a tree' broke, and the machine struck Milne heavily on the chest. Ho stood up, and one of his mates asked him if he was hurt. Ho did not reply. but fell backwards, and expired. Dr Wilson, of Hastings, was sent for. and on arrival pronounced life to bo extinct. The deceased had previously been employed aa a butcher at the Pakipaki freezing works, which were closed down a short time ago.
