The yarding at the weekly sale was exceedingly small, and the only point worthy of note is that some dairy cows reached up to £l2 and £l3. The Kia Ova, which loft this morning, took away 17,500 carcases of lamb and mutton, besides shoulders and loins. This will to some extent relieve the congestion at the freezing works, .and, as those will resume operations on Monday, a little life may be infused into the fat stock market. SOUTHLAND STOCK MARKET. (From Our Own Correspondent.) INVERCARGILL. Juno 25. Very little business in stock has been doing during the past week, owing, naturally,, to the very cold and miserable wftithor prevailing. There has, however, been a demand for good hoggets and wethers, and one or two lines of these have changed hands at prices as high as wo have seen for a long time past. Few speculators are operating, having held a bit of food for the past month or two, their idea being that wool at the beginning of lire year will see very high prices, and, in consequence, returns a fairly good profit to those running stock. As far as fat cheep are concerned, the opinion is largely prevalent that immediately the works open there will bo a very keen demand for all classes of fat sheep for the Homo authorities. While I am inclined to think that prices of fat sheep will keep good I am sure that the demand for beef from the War Office will bo far more extensive than for mutton, and fat cattle are sure to see even higher prices than they wore realising a month or two ago. There seems to lie a good demand for young store cattle, but buyers are advised not to rush this class too much
for some littlo time, as undoubtedly between the feeds —August and September—store cattle are sure to bo quiet of sale, and it may not bo good policy to buy now to hold through till the spring. No freezing operators aro moving in fat stock, and there is little prospect of the works being free to operate for another month at least. That means that our fat season is practically over, especially so for lambs, as there is very littlo hope of fattening any more of this class of stock in Southland this season.' The following are the values: Fat cattle: Ox beef, 38s to 395; heifer beef, 36s to 375; cow beef, 33s to 345.
