AUCKLAND. News has been received by the Atua of unrest among the Chinese coolies employed by the planters near A pui. It was feared that - the trouble would result in fighting between the rival factions. . HAWKE’S BAY. At the Supreme Court on the 17th Mr B. J. Dolan ‘entered an appeal against the sentence inflicted on Alice May Parkinson for manslaughter, on the ground that two police constables and a civilian spoke to the jury during their deliberations. His Honor (Sir Robert Stout) said this did not affect the validity of the proceedings, and the appeal was dismissed. WELLINGTON. Dr Thos. Henry Gibson Hall died in his car at Wellington on the 15th. He was noticed by pedestrians to be leaning over the wheel of the car, which travelled unguided and collided with a telegraph post. The car was going slowly. On investigation the doctor was found to be dead. Ho was 63 years of age. Of the Otago candidates who sat for the special law professional examination held by the University of New Zealand in May last the following passed in the subjects specified:—ln procedure, Arthur Charles Bretherton; in torts, Edward Percy Neale. WEST COAST. A proposal by the Duller County Council to raise a loan of £2OOO for the purchase and erection of a lime kiln at Cape Foulwind, with subsidiary kilns in different parts of the country, was carried on the 19th by 556 votes to 22. There are two small returns to come. The Buller Hospital Board has up till recently been constituted by four members from the county and four from the borough. Owing to an increase in the county valuation the county became entitled to five members and the borough to three. The borough members could not agree amongst themselves as to which one should retire, so the provision of the Act requiring a ballot was adopted, and the name of” Mr A. Leaver (Mayor of Westport), who at the recent elections headed the poll for the borough representatives, was drawn, and he resigned. The coal export last week was as follows : —Blackball Company, 1355 tons lewt. The weather conditions were responsible for the smallness of the export. CANTERBURY. At a mecuing of the South Canterbury Hospital Board on the 15th Dr Valintine (Inspector General of Hospitals) recommended the board to terminate its agreement with Otago for treatment of consumptives, as the southern institution was _ overcrowded, and to make arrangements with the North Canterbury Board, whereby South Canterbury consumptives may be treated at the Cashmere Hills Sanatorium. A committee was appointed to go into the matter. The Christchurch Licensing Committee made no recommendation regarding hours for closing hotels during the war. In the' Magistrate’s Court on the loth t he City Council was charged with a breach of the general labourers’ award in employing non-unionists. It was fined 20s and costs, the Magistrate remarking that it was not a deliberate breach, but in future he would hold the heads of the departments strictly responsible.
