CHALMERS LICENSING COMMITTEE.
ADJOURNED ANNUAL MEETING. / ' The adjourned annual meeting of the Chalmers Licensing Committee was held at Port Chalmers on Friday afternoon. Mr H. Y. Widdowson, S.M. presided, the other members of the committee present being; Messrs G. L. Asher, John Dicker, R. Terrier, E. W. Isbister, and D. M. Mawson. The business was the hearing of two applications for the issue of publicans’ licenses and eight applications for the renewal of such licenses. POETOBELLO HOTEL. J. M'Cluskcy, for whom Air Lang appeared, applied for the issue of a license for the Portobello Hotel. In reply to the bench the applicant said ho would attend to certain repairs, and the license was granted.
POET CHALMEES, HOTEL. Mr Lang also appeared to support tho application of John Douglas Warden for the issue of a publican’s license for the Port Chalmers Hotel. Mr Lang put in a report from tho Public Health Officer. The Chairman stated the requirements of the committee in the matter of repairs and improvements. These included the repapering of certain bedrooms, the fixing of window cords and sashes,'making a waste pipe discharge over a gully trap in the open - air, the renewing of fittings about the wash-house, the demolishing and rebuilding of closets in a different place, and the repairing of a wooden fire escape. Tho committee did not insist on the Health officer’s proposal to fill up a well in tho cellar. * Mr Lang undertook that these things would bo done, and the application was adjourned for one month to enable the committee’s requirements to be carried out. GEOBGE HOTEL. Mi- Lang supported the application of N. Macdonald for tho renewal of a publican’s license.for the George Hotel. Tho Chairman stated tho requirements of the committee, which included the renewing of windows and door fittings, the removal of decayed timber from the dining room floor, the making of a 'water-tight wall along the right-of-way. and improvement of drainage and wash-house fittings. The application was adjourned till --July 16. Mr Hay, on behalf of an owner of the George Hotel, stated that the making- of the -wall watertight would bo a very difficult matter, but was informed that the committee made that an absolute requirement. EAILWAY HOTEL, 3IOSGIEL. Mr A- C. Stephens supported the application of A. M. MTI-obie for the renewal of a publican’s license for the Railway Hotel, Mosgiel. Tho Chairman stated that the committee’s only requirement was that the present fire escapes be replaced by more up-to-date ladders. The license was granted on Mr Stephens undertaking that this would bo done either by the owner or the tenant within a fortnight. MARINE HOTEL. Mr E. MKowon appeared in support of his own application for a renewal of the license of the Marine Hotel. The Chairman stated that in this case tho committee had no requirements. It only suggested that the applicant make a better entrance to tho dining room if possible. Tho license was granted. CBESCENT HOTEL. Ellen Mackie applied for a renewal of the publican’s license for the Crescent Hotel. Tho Chairman laid down certain requirements in tho matter of kitchen drainage, and the application was adjourned for a month. chick’s HOTEL. Mr Platts appeared to support the application of E. Godfred for the renewal of the publican’s license for Chick’s Hotel. Tho Chairman said it appeared that tho floor of the cellar was in a very bad state. The committee required a drain to be put in order and the floor of the cellar to be renewed. MOSGIEL HOTEL. The application of J, Mathieson for the renewal of the publican’s license for the Mosgiel Hotel was supported by Mr T. K. Sidey, M.P. Mr Calvert appeared for the owner. The Chairman stated that tho only requirement was that tho closets in tho yard bo replaced by modern flush closets. Mr Calvert said that would involve connecting the whole of the premises with the drains. The Chairman said as far as the committee was concerned tho now closets might bo connected either with the sower or with the septic tank, but. he thought the Mosgiel Council would not consent to tho latter plan. , Mr Culvert undertook to have the necessary improvements made and vho application was adjourned for a month. WHITE HOUSE HOTEL. Mr Hay supported the application of Amos M‘Kcgg for a renewal of the publican’s license for tho White House Hotel, Henley. The Chairman stated that the ladder used for fire purposes must be kept on hooks by the verandah, and that the urinal be either replaced or given a concrete graded floor.
Mr Hay undertook that these requirements would be complied with, and till license was granted.
PROVINCIAL HOTEL. Mr Lang supported the application of D. M’Kenzie for a renewal of the publican’s license for the Provincial Hotel, Port Chalmers. The Chairman said ho was afraid tho committee could not grant the license to this hotel until it had been rebuilt. He thought it was unnecessary for him to point out what was the matter with it. The public health officer reported that it was insanitary and unfit for use as a hotel, and lie recommended that the building be removed and a new building erected on tho site. The committee was of opinion that this house was in a ruinous and dilapidated condition, absolutely out of repair. Mr Lang said that the owner was _in Dunedin making arrangements to rebuild. He asked that the license be granted on the understanding that if the place was not rebuilt within the next 12 months the license woidd not be renewed next June. Tho Chairman said the committee was not prepared to go so far as that. Sergeant Dougan said the owner had had four years’ warning that the place was out of repair. The Chairman said the committee proposed to adjourn this application for three months, and if at the end of that time plans and specifications had not been submitted and the contract let then the application would bo refused. If these things were done and it was necessary to have a renewal for a further term it. would be granted. The application was adjourned till tho quarterly meeting in September. LIGHTING AND CLOSING. The requirements in the matter of lighting and the closing hour were fixed as formerly.
