TARANAKI WINTER SHOW.

A SPLENDID DISPLAY,

Up to a couple of years ago Taranaki held its annual show in the spring-time, but as dairying developed it was found that the farmers could not leave their cows and attendant operations to attend the function. Autumn, when tho work in the cowbail was practically over for a time, was most opportune, and so for the benefit of all and sundry, the farmers in particular, the sho?/ was transferred from spring to autumn, and no one has regretted the change. The show has just taken place, the opening day being Wednesday, June 9. The committee were fortunate in being able to secure the distinguished patronage of the Prime Minister, the Right Hon. W,. F. Massey, to open the show, and this he did in the presence of a large crowd. The show on the whole was a most creditable one, the main feature from an agriculturist’s standpoint being the very fine display by the Agricultural Department, not only of products grown on the State farm, but also of crops produced on experimental plots. The Moumahaki State Farm display was of special interest, and iilcluded a fine show of potatoes, comprising 54 varieties, and a bulk exhibit of seed potatoes. These embrace Gamekeeper, Maori Chief, and King Edward. The field of Maori Chiefs is over 70 tons to the acre. There was a nice display of sheaves of the solid straw Tuscan and Burgoyne Fife, two good varieties of grain. The latter was shown on sale for seed purposes. There was the usual display of roots, including a bulk sample of Carton’s Superlative swedes. In addition to the exhibits of lucerne from the State Farm, there are several bales of lucerne hay made by various experimenters off co-opcra-tivo plots. The best sample was that grown by Mr Hector Booth, of Feilding, off a plot which lias now been in existence for five years. The show on the whole gave some idea of the productiveness of the Taranaki district. All the arrangements were splendidly carried out, and the officials are to be congratulated upon the very fine display and the splendid arrangement characterising the exhibition. DAIRY PRODUCE.
