BUDDHIST RIOTS IN CEYLON
COLOMBO. June 8. Official: On May 28 (Buddha’s birthday) Buddhists looted Moslem shops at Kandy. The outbreak was quelled, but it was diffused through the central province, where the military repressed it. A further outbreak at Colombo on the 31st was spreading in the south, but the Governor hoped to suppress it in a few days. The riots are due to a sudden outbreak of racial and commercial animosity. Much Moslem merchandise was destroyed, and numerous murders were committed. Several rioters were shot. According to the latest telegram the situation is in hand.
