WAIKOUAITI BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The monthly meeting of the Waikouaiti Borough Council was hold on Thursday evening; present—the Mayor (Mr G. J. L. Kerr), and Crs J. T. Allcock, R. Bell, H. Carson, E. Davis. A. Heckler, G. Maxwell, A. Rollins, W. Russell, and S. R. Smith. The Secretary of the Waikouaiti Dairy 'Factory Company wrote asking permission to remove from the Main road the pipes which formerly supplied the factory with water, but which, since the installation of borough water service, wore no longer required.—Permission granted, the surface of the road to bo loft in a condition satisfactory to the Works Committee. The Secretary of the Otago Acclimatisation Society wrote acknowledging the receipt of the council’s objection to the society placing the fish in the Garden Bush creek from which the borough water supply was obtained, and pointing out that the Dunedin City Corporation allowed the stocking of the city reservoirs with trout. — Received. The Town Clerk (Dunedin) wrote stating that tho_ City Corporation had no damaged cast-iron mains for disposal of the size mentioned in the council’s letter.—Received. The Devonport Borough Council -wrote asking for support in an attempt to induce the Government to_ remove the restrictions governing the fishing industry to enable of fish being purchased at a reasonable price.—Received. The Secretary of the Otago Hospital and Charitable Aid Board wrote forwarding a statement of the estimated receipts and expenditure of the board for the* current year, and showing that the council’s levy had been fixed at £66 7s lOd. —Received. Several applications for repairs to street entrances were referred to the Works Committee to attend to. The Finance Committee’s report (presented by Cr Davis) stated that although the present year commenced with a small credit balance, the bank overdraft was at present £245 4s lid. Apart from the Government subsidy on rates, and some outstanding accounts, very little revenue would bo available for expenditure until later in the year, when some half-yearly rents and the new rates would be due. Under the circumstances the committee recommended the council to observe the strictest economy in the meantime with regard to the general expenditure.—Adopted. Reports from the Works Committee and also the Water Committee were presented by Crs Russell and Rollins, and adopted. An agreement, prepared by Mr V/. C. Arklo, solicitor, of Palmerston, with reference to the laying of water mains through Mr A. S. Orbell’s property, was submitted for consideration and approved. The clerk was instructed to write Mr G. R. Fry inquiring upon what terms the council could obtain from the rotten-rook quarry on his property, a quantity of material for street maintenance purposes. Two tenders were received for the borough maintenance work for the year ending May, 1916, and that of Mr B. Allcock was accepted. Accounts amounting to £l4O 9s 4d were passed for payment.
