SOUTHLAND’S WINTER SHOW.

The Winter Show held at Invercargill last week under the auspices of the Southland Agricultural and Pastoral Association was a great success. The weather was favourable, and there came forward many excellent exhibits—in fact, with the excep-

tion of the fruit section, the quality of the products of the land was excellent. It was a happy thought changing the dates for holding the show, and thus allowing the Agricultural Department to set up almost a complete display of exhibits, which in themselves, with the various statistics relating to agriculture, are worthy of days of close attention. The show this year possessed features never before attached to the winter exhibition at Invercargill, although customary farther north, and the fat stock which were forward compared in many instances very favourably with_ other centres. The int:resting industrial exhibits evidenced the fact that the townsfolk are waking up, and realise that they must go hand in glove with the country people if Southland is to advance with a quickened gait. The implement section of the show was of special interest, and a feature in itself, the lime-spreaders and turnip-thinners and sowers attracting much attention. Lack of space has hitherto embarrassed the committee, and perhaps tended to check any enthusiasm; but now that satisfactory arrangements have been made with the Defence Department, a forward move is evident, and exhibitions farther north will have to look to their laurels with Southland in a winning mood, The show-fever seems to have gripped southerners to good effect, and the educative value of the past Winter Show will doubtless be far-reach-ing in its effects. The secretary (Mr Cuthbertson) evidsntlv had in his committee a willing number of workers, and his good work merits recognition.
