In a paragraph recently Sir James Carroll was reported to have stated “That he had said at the last election that Sir Joseph Ward had no right to give the Dreadnought to the Empire. He had certainly said so, and would say so again. Sir Joseph Ward had no right to give a Dreadnought to the Motherland without first consulting Parliament.” The remarks were wrongly attributed to Sir James Carroll. They were made by his opponent (Mr H. de Lautour), a report of whose speech followed immediately on one by Sir James Carroll, and were inadvertently ascribed to the former. It is due to Sir James Carroll that the mistake should he rectified. BIBLE IN SCHOOLS. BISHOP’S PASTORAL. WELLINGTON, November 30. A pastoral from the Anglican Bishop of New Zealand, appealing to congregations “To make the religious interests of the country the first question, by voting only for members of Parliament who will pledge themselves to vote for the Religious Instruction Referendum Bill” was read in the various Anglican churches last night. PAYING FOR THE WAR. (Frou Our Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, November 30. One point—and it is of considerable importance—that the agricultural and pastoral community will have to bear in mind at the coming election is that, if the Liberals and “Red Feds.” are returned to power a Very determined atteiqit will bo made to make the man on the land pay the principal share of extra taxation that might be needed as the result of- the war. The Social Democrats have made no secret of the fact that in their opinion the farmer should be made to pay. They argue that at the present time the man on the land is the only one who is making anything out of the war, owing to the rise in the price of foodstuffs and wool. They do not say anything about the lean years for the farmer that may follow the war. OTAGO CENTRAL. Mr R.
