The profits of tho show are to bo divided equally between the Belgian and Patriotic Funds, and it..is expected that substantial amounts will bo realised CANTERBURY MARKETS. GRAIN AND PRODUCE REPORT. (Lyttelton Times, Saturday, November 28.) Business in wheat, as far as farmers arc concerned, is practically non-existent. The number of parcels placed on offer is very j small, and scarcely a single farmer is pro- j pared to accept tho maximum price as fixed . by the Government. In spite of this, how- 1 ever, a certain amount of trade is passing, j mainly between merchants, and it is gene- j rally considered that the proclamation is i being set at defiance, and that_ prices much in excess of that fixed are being paid. It is considered in many quarters that the cry which is being raised that there ig not a sufficiency of wheat to last until the new harvest is available is very largely an artificial one, and that supplies arc ample to meet requirements. quantities of grain are being held for higher prices, and the conviction is abroad that were the grain placed freely on the market, as has been invariably the case in normal years, there would be a sufficiency for all. However, there can be no doubt I hat much grain is being hoarded with a view to famine prices, and it is that action on the part of holders that is causing the scarcity which is now being severely felt in some quarters, but more particularly in Dunedin, where an acute shortage of flour and bread is threatened. | There is a good demand for oats, but the i amount available is comparatively small, and at tho moment the quantity offering by growers is very small. Prices are firm, ; and no difficulty is experienced in obtain- | imr full quotations. Chaff is in good request, and the current price is £3 5s per ton, on trucks at country stations. Should there be an abundant fall of rain, it is expected that prices ; will ease. Tho potato market is firm, and prices , have advanced since last report, tho cur- j rent price ranging from £3 5s to £3 10s | on trucks. Tho amount offered is relatively j small, and most of those who fed their I tubers to the stock some time ago arc , regretting their action. Even now some holders refuse to accept tho comparatively remunerative prices offering, holding* out for £4, apparently forgetful of tho fact that the potato market must close down within a few weeks. The following quotations are for pun phases from farmers, not cash, sacks extra, delivered at country stations: Wheat—Fixed by Government proclamation. 5s 3d f.o.b. , Oats— Gartens, 2s to 2s sd; Algerians. 2s 6d to 2s I Ocl : Duns, 2s 3d to 2s 6d; Danish, 2s 4d to 2s 6d. Potatoes —£3 5s to £3 10s. Barley—Malting 3s 3d to 3s 6d per bushel, according to quality. Partridge Peas —4s. Chaff—£3 ss. „ „ Bran —Local £4 15s, f.o.b £4 10s. Pollard—£6 10s per ton. Oatmeal—£l4 per ton. Flour— £l3 (fixed by Government proclamation). Seeds-Ryegrass (Italian and neremral), 2s to 2s 3d:' cocksfoot iSib seed. 4J,d to 4gd ; white clover, farm dressed, 7d to lOd; c-ow-grass 63d to 7Jcl, Dairv Produce —Ohees.e. dairv, large, ojd: ! fresh local factory prints Is Id; tanners’ 1 separator. lOrl; farm dairy 9d. Hams Is. Lard, pats B|d to 9d. Eggs, Is per dozen. : TTMARU. 1 (Tho Press. Saturday, November 28.) Tho local wheat market is in a very curious condition at present—so curious that business is almost, at a standstill. This is •. owing to tho proclamation which limits the j price to be paid or accepted for wheat and | flour. It is stated that come wheat, sales arc going through at 5s and 6s 3d per bushel, notwithstanding that tho limit fixed , bv law is 5s 3d. This, it is said, can be

clone by charging 5s 3d for the wheat and making up the difference by putting it on to the price of the sacks, or in the alternative, by shipping at 5s 3d and getting the difference between this and 6s or 6s 3d in “ charges,” which can be made up under various headings. Under the first proclamation it was possible to sell milling wheat as chick-wheat and charge a higher price for I it; but that is not possible legally under j the existing proclamation, as it applies to j all wheat. It seems clear; however, that the proclamation can be evaded, and in any I case, holders will not accept 5s 3d, and as ! mhiers cannot get wheat except by paying more for it, they are refusing many orders j for flour. Offers of 6s per bu-'hol were made ; in town to-day, and refused, the holders j wanting more. Some buyers decline, howj over, to do business on any other basis than : that fixed by law. It is already predicted i that there will be a shortage of wheat next year, by reason of the way the growing crops have been stunted through the dry weather. Very few oats are offering, thougn there is a strong demand for this cereal. A credo Cartons are worth 2s 7d on trucks, and B grade 2s 5d to 2s 7d. There is a good inquiry for feed barky, and sales are being made at 3s on trucks, the barley being wanted for shipment to Australia. Comparatively little is offering. _ The grass seed season is almost finished, and oatsheaf chaff is about cleared out. Potatoes, which had been obtainable for j almost nothing, are now worth £2 to £2 1 10s per ton; but with the advent of the new crop the old tubers may be expected to quickly fall off again in price.
