NATIONAL ART COMPETITION

THE NEW ZEALAND AWARDS. (Tiiom Oca Own CoESKaroirDEirr ) New Zealand is again the only oversea dominion to send sots of work for the 1914 National Competition, promoted by the Board of Education and on the whole it may be said that the works have secured their fair share of commendation. The competition is very largely English; out of the total of 8823 sets of work, no fewer than 8257 coming from English schools of art Wales sends 76, Scotland 23, Ireland 396, the Isle of Man 14. and Now Zealand 57 from three schools. In all there are awarded eight gold medals, 79 silver medals. 196 bronze medals, 355 book prizes, and 1299 commendations. The successful Now Zealand competitors are: — Bronze medal: Stephanie Baekhurst (Christchurch School of Artj, coloured studies of hands and feet from life. Book prizes: Annie Gibb (Christchurch School of Art), coloured studios of hands and feet from life; and Kenneth M. Balkntyne (Woffington Technical College), shaded drawing of figure from the nude. Commended: Christchurch School of Art-Ruby Partridge, painting in oil colours, study of the interior of a building; and Carrie Poison, group in oil colours. „ T ... Ballantyne, modelled head from life; Evelyn Dawson, shaded drawings _of tree’s from Nature; Teresa Farm, design for damask serviette; Isabel H.
