THE BOY SCOUTS

By Scoutmaster.

" Scoutmaster " will bo pleased to receive reports of parades and other items of interest fox Insertion in this column. They should be left at the office of the Otago Daily Times not later than noon on Mondays, and should be addressed to “ Scoutmaster." All inquiries regarding local troops, etc., should be made to the District Secretary, Dunedin Boy Scouts, Box 312. C.P.0.. Dunedin. Corporal Boyd, of the 3rd Dunedin West Central Troop, has been awarded the certificate for gallantry by his Excellency the Governor (Dominion Chief Scout!. It will be remembered that when Boyd and two other boys were on duty at the Defence Office some time ago, a runaway horse, attached to a butcher’s cart, dashed up. The other scouts (presumably tenderfoot) rushed in front of the horse, waving their hands, but Boyd, being prepared, climbed over the back of the cart, and, seizing the reins, brought the horse to a standstill.

His action is commendable for his promptness and rcscourcefulnces, and had ho endangered his life in the attempt to stop the horse ho would, Colonel Cossgrove informs me, have received the medal for gallantry. The certificate will be presented to him on December 3. Scoutmaster Carless, who is at present in the North Island on leave, has undertaken the care of a troop at Waihi so long as ne stays in the town. When in Dunedin ho proved himself a very keen officer, and 1 am sure that he will show himself equally keen in the work ho is now doing.
