LONDON, November 23. In connection with the Lord Alfred Douglas case a riot was organised, during which the prisoner w r as to endeavour to escape from confinement. November 26. A meeting of leading fruit brokers and merchants discussed market prospects for Australian fruit, and expressed the unanimous opinion that British markets were able to absorb the usual quantity of Australian fruit in the coming season at fair prices. November 27. Captain Charles Carlos Clarke, of the Royal Bucks Hussars, was married to Lady Eileen Knox, the youngest daughter of Lord Ranfurly. In the Lord Alfred Douglas libel case the jury disagreed. November 29. It is stated that the recent outrage at Calcutta was the work of a revengeful anarchist, and was not connected with the war or the political situation. A new company-, to be known as Purgen’s, Ltd., with a capital of half a million, has been registered to acquire the British brands (?) of the Dutch margarine firm of that name. The London Times has celebrated its century of steam printing. PARIS, November 29. It is stated that the Khedive on July 27 was shot through both cheeks at Constantinople by a young Egyptian, who was subsequently mysteriously lulled. ATHENS, November 29. A severe earthquake has considerably damaged the lonian Isles. Many houses were destroyed and three persons killed on San Mura. NEW YORK, November 24. The San Francisco News states that 43 survivors of the Hanalei have been rescued by life lines through the surf. Fifteen lives were lost. The pounding seas broke the vessel up. November 25. “Boss” Croker’s impending marriage is announced with Miss Beulah Edmondson, whose grandfather was the noted chief Sequoyq head of the Cherokee Indians.
