AUSTRALIAN AND VICTORIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS. MELBOURNE, November 28. The Australian lawn tennis championships were commenced here to-day. In the Men’s Singles O’Hara Wood (Victoria) beat Patterson (Victoria), 6—4, 6 —3, 5 —7, 6 —l. In the Doubles Campbell and Patterson (Victoria) beat Heath and O’Hara Wood (Victoria), 7 —5, 3 —6, 6 —2, 6 —3. In the Ladies’ Singles Championship of Victoria, Misa Stewart beat Miss Schlesingor. 6 —o, 6—4. In the Doubles Misses Stewart and Westmoreland beat Misses Gy ton and Levon, 6 —3, 4—6, 7 —5. Patterson is a young player, who has been coming into prominence during the past year or two. That he is a player of undoubtedy ability is shown by the closeness of his contest with so well-known an exponent of the game ag A. O’Hara Wood. Campbell partnered Lycctt last year in the Victorian Championships, the pair being defeated by Brookes and Dunlop, 6—o, 6—4, 6-4. OTAGO ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY. The monthly meeting of the Otago Acclimatisation Society was held on 30th uJt., the vice-president (Mr C. W. Chamberlain) in the chair. The Angling Committee reported having dealt with the following correspondence:— The Town Clerk (Dunedin) wrote that the corporation could not see its way to get the branches of the willows overhanging the Leith cut away. —Received. The Secretary of the Wyndham Anglers’ Association wrote giving particulars of amounts received for rent of hut on the Mimihau.— Recommend that the Wyndham Anglers’ Association bo informed that the society desires it should continue to look after the hut; spend some of the money in hand in fixing it up, the balance to _ bo spent in clearing the banks of the river. F. Moorchouso (Rotorua) wrote regarding the shortage of ova sent, also in re boxes supplied last year. —Recommend that a reply bo sent that the society has returned the boxes, and ask him to take the amount off his account.-- —W. G. Bcckor (Oturehua) wrote applying for some fish for darns and streams. —Recommend that Mr Steven try to give him some. W. M'Connochio (St. Batlians) wrote asking for some frogs, minnows, or fresh water lobsters. —Recommend that Mr Pcllett got some frogs and minnows. J. Robson (Niagara) wrote saying ho was willing to act as agent for the society, also applying for some trout.— Recommend that Air Robson be supplied with a free license. —The report w T as adopted. The Game Committee reported that W. Miller, jun., Taumata. had offered to supply Mr Stevens with 25 bushels of wheat at 4s 6d per bushel. —Received.- The Sccro-

(■ary of the South Canterbury Acclimatisation Society wrote stating that his society was doing all it could to preserve and add to existing flocks of mallard ducks. —Received. J. Logan. Makarora, wrote stating that ho had liberated 22 opossums on Mount Albert station, and asking whether they were his property or the society’s.— Recommend that a reply be sent stating that the opossums had been paid for.— — Dr .Simpson. Christchurch, wrote applying for block XII in the deer country for himself and Mr F. W. Johnston, in place of Messrs Acland and Campbell, who had gone to the war. —Recommend that permission be granted to shoot on block XII, provided Messrs Acland and Campbell are not back in time. C. W. Harycy, Hawca Flat, wrote stating that owing to unforeseen circumstances he would not be able to go stalking this veor on block XXV. —Mr P. IT. Vickery, Invercargill, wrote applying for the block for himself and Mr R. MacKenzie.—Reeommrnd that permission be granted to Messrs and MacKonzie to shoot on block XXV. T. Gillespie, Dum'din. wrote advising (hat he had shot throe old stairs and 10 young ones in the Waikoua’ti (Jorge on Labour Day.—R- 1 - '•eiv'd. W. P. Cotter, secretary. Upper Clutha Progressive League, wrote protesting against the destruction of hawks recently carried out in Otago Central, and asking that it bo discontinued. —Recommend that Mr Cotter be informed that the society is not paying for hawks now. J. Oowie, Nicholls. Dunedin, wrote inqu’rmg if the society would assist him to g°t some native birds. — Recommend that the society inquire from Mr Nichols where he intends to liberate them. Murray, Roberts, and Go. wrote applying to nave the dam situated on section 22. block IX, e trath-Taieri. on a portion of the Glndhrook estate, declared a sanctuary for game. •—R,"commond that the soeiety get further narticulars ns to the size of the block, distance from the township, etc. -F. C. Govan. Gatlins River, wrote enclosing account for 20 opossums.—Sub-committee recommends that Mr Govan he advised that the society cannot recognise his claim. — i'he reoort was adopted. Mr Steven reported that every available hour during the past month had been devoted to the distribution of frv and yearlings in various, streams, and that at time of writing 18.000 yearlings and about half the total number of frv had been liberated. The weather had been exceptionally suitable for the work, and as a consequence there had boon no loss in transit. The reports from anglers throughout the southern nart of the society’s district invariably stated that there were plenty of fish, in fine condition. I’he streams are now in splendid fishing order. —The report was received. Mr Rteven further reported that both the oH Canadian geese at Oh’nton had hatched out their broods. One hatehed out four birds from «ix eggs hut one of the goslings had since died. The other bird hatched out two chicks from three eggs, so there were only five birds from the two broods. There was no sign of anv of the other birds building this season. The following birds were in stock: —16 hen pheasants, 9 cooks. 1 jungle cock. 10 mallard ducks, 5 drakes, and 50 ducklings (there were a number of settings to hatch out, also several settings of pheasants due to hat-ch out shortly), 5 Gape Barren geese and 5 gosh'ngs, 16 Canadian geese and 5 goslings. Two settings of pheasant eggs had been sent to Cromwell, as directed, and two settings of mallards to Seaward Downs. —The report was •received. It was decided to accept the offer of Mr T. Telford. Otanomomo, to supply the society with a number of opossums, the society’s ranger to do the trapping. It was also decided to send a pair of Canadian geese to Mr Telford, and six pair of quail. Mr W. Martin, Papatowai, wrote applying for a number of eel pots. lie stated that the Tahakopa River was a splendid trout stream, but that the trout suffered through the depredations of eels. As an illustration of the size of the eels in the river he stated that one of his sons had caught one a few years “ago which had weighed 281 b.— It was decided to send eel pots, as requested. It was decided to present Mr F. Deans, the society’s ranger, with a photograph of himself, suitably inscribed. It was decided, on the motion of Mr Pedcn, seconded by Mr Butterworth—“ That licenses bo granted to net on Lake Hawca, for one mile from the mouth of the Tiraaru Creek, on the south-east side, to one mile from Long Valley Creek, on the south side, at a foe of £l, one net only to be used for one license. _ The Finance Committee reported that accounts amounting to £B7 8s 4d had been passed for payment. The bank balance at date stands at £l7O. The Chairman mentioned that an inquiry had boon received asking what was the minimum size of porch which could be taken. Members expressed the opinion that there was no restriction as to size, and it was formally decided to write_ to the department asking for information on the point.
