LAKE COUNTY.

October 3.—At the end of last week very win.ry weather was experienced. There was heavy rain, interspersed witli hail and enow. However, the , weather has now cleared up, and for the past few days has been all that could be desired. Tennis.—The official opening - of the Queenstown Tennis Ciub was to have been held on Saturday last, but owing to the unfavourable weather had to be postponed until the 10th hist. The Arrow Club heid its opening this afternoon, in beautiful weather. There was a large attendance, representatives being present from the Cromwell. Queenstown, and Gibbston Clubs. Mr D. Macleod, president, suitably welcomed the visitors, and the first ball was served by Mrs Melville, after which several enjoyable games were played. Afternoon tea was provided by the ladies. Deaths.—Mr Daniel 0 ! Feo, one of the oldest residents of the Arrow district, passed away at his home, Crown Terrace, on Sunday last, after a short illness.

Deceased, who had reached the age of 85 years, was a native of Colmoro, County Antrim, Ireland, and came out to Australia in 1857, where he followed mining. lie came to New Zealand in 1861, and was at Gabriel’s Gully for a time. _ Ho arrived at Arrowtown in 1862, and. with ins brother, the late Mr C. O'Fce, whose death took place in February last, was associated in the management of an hotel. Ho afterwards took up land on the Crown Terrace, whore lie resided up to the time of his death. Deceased, who was unmarried, was of a quiet and retiring disposition, and was respected by all. The funeral took place at Arrowtown on Wednesday, and was largely attended. The Rev. \\ r . Uphill conducted the burial service.—Another old and respected resident of the district in the person of Mr George White, of Lake Hayes, died at the Arrow Hospital on Wednesday last. Deceased had been a resident of Lake Hayes, where ho followed farming pursuits, for over 40 years. Deceased was 80 years of ago, and loaves a widow' and family of three daughters and two sons to mourn their loss. The funeral took place at Arrowtown yesterday, when a largo number of friends followed the remains to their last resting place. The burial service was conducted by the Rev. J. Ryloy. Personal. —Mr J. A. Algio left Queenstown on Wednesday for Taihape. Prior to his departure ho was the recipient of a gentleman’s travelling companion from the members of the 42nd Senior Cadets. Mr Crocker, who succeeds Mr Algio as postmaster at Queenstown, took up his duties on Tuesday.—General regret was expressed throughout the district on Wednesday when news w r as received of the death of the Hon. Thomas Fergus. Deceased represented the Wakatipu in Parliament for many years, and was very popular with all classes. Only about three weeks ago he paid a visit to his Coronet Peak Station, in this district, and appeared to be in his usual health and spirits. Mining.—Tenders for the Shamrock Company’s claim and plant closed on Saturday last. The only ‘tenderer was Mr A. F. Hawke, Invercargill, and Ids tender of £ll2O was accepted. It is understood that work will be resumed on the claim shortly. Dairy Factory.—The Lake County Dairy Factory opens on Monday next. It is expected that there will be a considerable increase in the quantity of milk to bo received at the factory this year as compared with last. Ball.-—The Queen? town spinsters and benedicts entertained a large gathering at a ball in the Garrison Hall last evening. The hall was nicely decorated with flags and evergreens. The music was supplied by Miss Guderoon (piano) and Mr J Fraser (violin), and the duties of M.C. wore carried out by Mr J. J. M‘Bride.
