EARL ROBERTS’ BIRTHDAY.
CONGRATULATIONS FROM NEW ZEALAND. WELLINGTON, September 30. In the Legislative Council this afternoon, the Hon. H. D. Bell moved---* That the Legislative Council of New Zealand, on the occasion of the eighty-second anniversary. of the birth of Earl Roberts, oolonel-in-chief of the forces of his Majesty’s possessions beyond the seas, desires to'recognise the splendid service which his Lordship has rendered to the Empire in the past, and to express its hope that he may be spared for many years to come to command the New soldiers, who are proud to have the privilege or serving under him.” Mr Bell said lie had tried to express in words what the country felt. Ail Englishmen knew and valued Lord Roberts’s services. The Hon. Captain Baillie (who had served under Lord Roberts’s father), seconded the motion, expressing the honour the Council felt at passing the motion. Since 1857 Lord Roberts's name had been a household word throughout the Empire. He pointed out that Lord Roberts had foreshadowed what took place in August. The resolution was carried unanimously, and his Excellency the Governor is to be requested to cable the message to Lord Roberts. A .similar resolution was passed in the House.
