PATRIOTIC FONDS

FARMERS’ UNION. The secretary of the Provincial Council of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union (Mr Hugh. Mitchell) has received the following further donations towards the Patriotic Fund from the branches mentioned': Hampden Branch. —Mr A. M'Kerrow, a horse. Middlemarch. —Messrs Stronach, Morris £5, W. S. Williams £1 Is, Andrew Williams and W. Williams £1 Is, W. M'Leod £l, W. Newcornbe £l, B. Jones £l, J. Linton £l, J. Brolly £l, F. Pickard £l, W. Towler £l, L. Ledwidger £l, J. Heard £l, W. These will be put on trucks at Heriot on Tuesday, Lawrence Branch.—Mr John Brook, one horse, also £3O for the special purpose of providing a horse for Trooper A. Bellany. Olydevale Branch. —A combined public meeting with the Farmers’ Union was held in the Clydevale Hall for the purpose of assisting the Expeditionary Force Fund. The collection in the hall amounted to £25, and further donations are still coming in; 55 sacks of oats, three tons of chaffy and one artillery horse, given by Messrs D." Murray, H. Snushall, Tout, Hall Bros., Cox Kee, Mackenzie, Bunn, and J. B. Mitchell. At the same meeting the ladies of Clydevale decided to forward a box of comforts for the force. Balclutha Branch.—A combined meeting of the A. and P. Society and the public was held, and a very strong committee formed for the whole district to save overlapping. Three horses have already been trucked—one three-quarter draught each from Messrs D. R. Jack, W. Telford, and one remount from F. Telford. A fourth is to come from W. Telford. Several unbroken .horses that have been offered it is proposed to have broken in. One ton of chaff was sent in on Saturday. The branch suggested that chaff bags might, be turned into money by being sold from the Defence Department. Tapanui Branch. —The branch is amalgamating with the various bodies in the district to raise funds to assist tho Expeditionary Force. Several donations of horses have been given \which have to be inspected by the Government inspector before being sent on. Contributions of oats, chaff, potatoes, etc., are also being freely received. The Inspector-general of Schools forwarded a copy of a circular addressed to head teachers of public and Native schools suggesting that the children be/asked to contribute 3d each towards the equipment of an ambulance corps to b© attached to the forces of the Empire, and _ narticularly to the New Zealand Forces if that can be arranged, though it would also be used in the interest of humanity, for on the field of battle there is no distinction of nation among the suffering and the wounded. In the manner proposed (the circular stated) it was that a sum of over £2OOO would be raised. —On the motion of the Hon. T. Fergus, seconded by Mr J. Mitchell, it was decided to comply with the request, and to recommend the proposal to the favourable consideration of the school children. PATRIOTIC AND GENERAL WELFARE FUND. The following communication, which explains itself, Jhas been forwarded to Mr E. F. Duthie, lion, secretary of the Patriotic

and General Welfare Fund: —“T have the honour to advise you that at a meeting of the staff of the Otago Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, recently held, the following resolutions were carried unanimously : ‘ (1) That tins meeting agrees to subscribe voluntarily to a fund (as a staff) to be devoted to the relief of any distress that may be in Otago. (2) That the money be handed to the Otago Patriotic and General Welfare Fund for the purpose of any distress in Otago.’ Several of the subscribers have agreed to subscribe each month, and it is understood that, should necessity arise, a further collection will bo taken up through the staff later on.” The head, office staff contributions amount to £7 13s; Dunedin Hospital, £ls 19s; Otago Benevolent Institution, £2 17s; Pleasant Valley Sanatorium, £8 ss; Forth Street Maternity Home, 14s 6d; Tapanui Cottage Hospital, £2; Kaitangata Hospital, £1; Port Chalmers Hospital, 5s; —total, £3B 18s 6cL Mr E. F. Duthie, hon. secretary- of the Patriotic and Welfare Fund, has received a donation of £9 from the staff of the Stafford Hospital. The Misses MTTeady, of Middle Kyeburn Station, have intimated their willingness to supply 50 sacks of oats or a money donation of 20 guineas if preferred. Mr F. J. Williams, engineer, of this city, has placed) his services at the disposal of the Patriotic and Welfare Committee, free of charge, in connection with any proposed relief works that may be inaugurated by the association. Mr Alex. Stewart has forwarded a cheque for £25. The executive will meet at the Town Hall to-morrow morning at 11 o'clock. PATRIOTIC TOURNAMENT. The first of the patriotic tournament promoted by the Otago Rugby Union was played off at Carisbrook on Saturday between the Southern and Zingari-Richmond teams. The weather was fine, but there was a poor attendance. Tjie game was fast and open, both teams playing attractive football. The opening of the first spell were in favour of Zingari, but towards the end of the spell Southern came with a rattle, and in the second half the Bhick-and-W-hites were the dominant factor. The match ended in a win for Southern by 20 points to 8. Mr Heron was referee.

OTAGO HUNT. A special meeting of the executive of the Otago Hunt was held on the 20th, Mr B. S. Irwin presiding. Mr A. C. Smith moved—“ That the Otago Hunt steeplechase meeting he held on September 5, and that half of the net proceeds be devoted to the Relief Fund or Patriotic Fund.” Mr J. Brown seconded the motion, which was carried unanimously. LADY LIVERPOOL FUND. Certain country districts have sent donations for the Lady Liverpool Fund direct to Wellington. Dunedin is the acknowledged centre for Southland and Otago, and donations should be sent to the executive here. All gifts should be sent to the Early Settlers’ Hall.
