LOVER FIRED UPON.
GIRL’S BROTHER ARRESTED. INVERCARGILL, August 19. A young man, David Cody, a resident of Heddon Bush, was admitted to the hospital suffering from a wound in one of his hands, caused by a rifle ball. The circumstances under which the wound was Inflicted are said to be that he was courting the daughter of a neighbouring farmer, but the affair not being viewed with favour by the parents of the girl, their interchange of love messages was chiefly by letters left by Cody in a secret repository near the girl’s home. The other night Cody made his wav to the repository, and when a few yards from the spot was challenged by someone hidden by the darkness. He took no notice, and a moment afterwards heard the click of what he took to be a rifle. He continued on his way and had gone some little distance when a report rang out and. he was struck by a bullet. It is understood that the bullet struck the main bone in his hand and that it was only removed with considerable difficulty. A young man, a brother of the girl with whom Cody was corresponding, has been arrested.
