HOSPITAL AND CHARITABLE AID BOARD.
The fortnightly meeting of the Citato Hospital rand Charitable Aid Board, held on the 11th, was attended by Mr Walker (chairman), Airs Jackson. Alessrs Alyers, Knight, F. G. Gumming, Talboys, J. Gumming, Blackie, and *Dr W. Marshall Macdonald. The board passed a vote of sympathy with Dr Hall in the loss sustained by him in tho death of his father. Dr Cameron wrote stating that at a meeting of the Hospital Board it was agreed with a deputation from the Otago branch of tho British Alcdical Association (Otago branch) to ask Dr Valintine to cable to tho High Commissioner in London inquiring tho price of 250 milligrammes of radium and the earliest date at which it could be supplied.—The Chairman said the quantity of radium required would cost about £4OOO, of which the hoard would pay £IOOO. The contributing bodies would bo circularised, asking them to subscribe £IOOO. The local branch of the British Medical Association would contribute £IOOO, and there would bo a Government subsidy of £IOOO Thera were several cases in Dunedin., awaiting treatment by radium, and if this quantity were obtained it might prove a valuable asset to the Hospital, as oases would no doubt be sent hero from other parts. Dr Valintine had cabled to the High Commissioner as suggested.—After a brief discussion, the Chairman said the matter would come before the board again when the High Commissioner's reply came to hand. Tile Aledical Superintendent wrote recommending the approval of Dr Cameron’s suggestion that, owing to the extension of work in the x-ray department, a sister be appointed to assist in the work in that department.—The recommendation was referred to the Hospital Committee. Mr Adam Anderson, of Riverton, instructed by Air George Dickson, wrote stating that on three separate occasions during Miss Dickson’s stay in the Miller Ward at the Dunedm Hospital friends or relatives left certain delicacies for her, but these comforts, it appeared, had not been supplied to her. —Airs Jackson remarked that this sort of thing often happened at the Hospital.—Tho letter was referred to the medical superintendent for a report. In moving the adoption of the Finance Committee’s report, the Chairman said that tho work of laying- tho foundation of the nurses’ home by day labour would provide employment for a number of men who were at present out of work in the city. This would relieve tome of the distress that was being experienced just now. It was resolved to appoint Air William M. Clark as foreman of works in connection, with the laying of the foundations, of the nurses’ home at a salary of £5 per week.
