TRIALS OF A TRAVELLER
NEW YORK, May 1. j Mr Anthony Fiala, Mr Roosevelt’s travelling companion, has arrived here j from Rio de Janeiro. He states that he i was sucked under when shooting the rapids in the Papagaio River. The natives ! swam ashore, and he had great difficulty j in avoiding drowning, owing to a map--1 board that was strapped to his wrist. He managed, however, to catch an overhanging tree, and scrambled ashore. LONDON, May 2. The Daily Telegraph states that the Roosevelt party was short of food. The Amazonas lost'five out of seven canoes m rapids and cataracts. Mr Roosevelt is very weak. He lived on eggs and tea for 21 days. The jiarty was practically shut in a deep ravine for 40 days. The cliffs on either hand were inaccessible. Their progress in the jungle was about 600 yards daily. Mr Roosevelt was stricken with fever after quitting the ravine.
