CHURCH IN EAST AFRICA
LONDON, January 19. In the sermon by the Archbishop of York at St. Mary’s Cathedral, Edinburgh, on the Church in East Africa, he said that it was needless to remind his hearers of the ties binding them to their Protestant fellow-Christians, but they must also remember there could be no fulfilment of the divine purpose in uniting in any scheme that did not ultimately include the great Latin Church of the West and the Orthodox Churches of the East, whereto they still were bound by many ties of common faith and practice. A satisfactory solution of the problem depended on the tone and temper of the Churches. He urged the necessity for patience, and emphasised the example of the two great Presbyterian Churches in their search after reunion, January 22. The English Church Union has expressed sympathy with the Bishop of Zanzibar’s action. It has referred his letter with regard to Uganda and the resolution passed at the Lambeth Conference in 1888 to a legal committee to consider the questions arising therefrom affecting the church’s doctrine and discipline.
