THE SOLOMON ISLANDS
UNREST AMONG THE NATIVES BRISBANE, November 21. Planters from the Solomon Islands report great unrest amongst the natives in the group. Gun-running and threatened insurrection are rife. Recently a number of rifles and 3000 rounds of ammunition were seized aboard a vessel at Tulgai. Previous to this a Japanese craft was detained on suspicion of gun-running, and the captain was fined £3OO. As the fine was not forthcoming the Government is now negotiating for the sale of the vessel. The natives are offering big prices for guns and ammunition. The headquarters of the Melanesian Mission at Choiseulc have been fortified against a threatened attack by natives. Cannibalism is still prevalent in some of the islands. Two months ago a couple of boys were killed and eaten at Sancristoval.
The two murderers of the settler Keller have been captured and sentenced to death. According to their story the chief of their district offered them shell money to the value of £1 for the head of a white man.
