PRODUCERS’ ASSOCIATION.
MEETING OF BOARD OF CONTROL. WELLINGTON, November 19. A meeting of the New Zealand Board of Control of the Bristol and Dominion Producers’ Association was held here today. Mr E. J. Collie, of Wellington, was appointed secretary. A considerable amount of administrative work was settled, and it was decided to make advances on a basis that would be new in the dominion as regards meat. It was reported that there were quite a number of shipments of dairy produce already made, and steps wore being taken to send forward initial shipments oi meat. Mr W. D. Lvsnar read a letter from Mr G. P. Donnelly, who has just returned from a trip from England, in which ha eays: “When at Home I made it my business to visit both dock's, and asked the High Commissioner to allow Mr Crabbe. the Government veterinary surgeon ana agent, to accompany me, which he did. After going over the Bristol docks I can safely say there is no comparison as far ns the handling of frozen meat and produce is concerned. The accommodation for transhipping could not be better at Bristol, and if they carry out further improvements in the accommodation, which I was informed they intend doing, it will be everything that is required for our frozen meat and other products. I was more than surprised at the handling of frozen meat at the other docks. In London, after all these years of the shipping of frozen meat, it is surprising to see the primitive way in which the work is done. I actually found them running the frozen meat, from three to five', carcases, on hand trollies for a distance of from two to tlu'ee chains to the railway trucks, in dust and dirt consisting of horse droppings and other refuse. As you are aware, the wheels are not above 9in from the ground. There is no doubt that our going into this matter has. given them a great shock, and they now talk of going in for very large improvements. It clearly goes to prove that all you have said to
the shippers in the dominion was quite justifiable.”
