TAIERI SHOW.
EXCELLENT DISPLAY OF CLYDESDALES. The fifty-third annual show of the Taieri Agricultural Society took ylaco at the Allanton show ground on the 18th. At one time it seemed that for the first time during the 15 years for which the show has been hold at Allanton the society was to be favoured with a really fine day, but the rain that set in early in the afternoon quickly dispelled any such pleasant illusion. Ihe attendance was nevertheless very large, and with a fine contempt for the wet, suggestive of long familiarity, the spectators, young and old and of both sexes, settled themselves in their coats and umbrellas round the ring to feast their eyes on some of the prettiest pictures in horseflesh to be seen in New Zealand. It must be admitted, however, that the weather had its effect in making the large majority of visitors by rail favour the early train home. The entries, which numbered over 000. considerably exceeded last year s total, though they fell short of the total recorded two years back. The chief increase was in the dairy produce section, in which conn petition was very keen and the all-round standard decidedly high. Cattle, sheep, and dogs ail showed slight but in the horses, and particularly in the light section, there was a distinct falling off. This was attributed on all hands to the general effects of the floods and the bad season that has been experienced. The following comparative table shows the total entries during the last three years:
The Taicri Show undoubtedly ranks as the parade of draught horses in Otago. Ihe district has much to be proud of in its annual show fixture, which is essentially an exhibition of Clydesdale horses —horses which have beaten all others in competition throughout the dominion. Other classes of stock are certainly represented, but only in a manner which cannot be regarded as out standing when compared with other district shows. The society has always dealt with its annual show in a whole-hearted manner, giving as much encouragement its finances render possible, but in view of the special nature of the show and the necessity for the provision of housing for high-class horses it is a pity that it has not yet acquired a ground of itg own in which permanent loose boxes might be erected. A treat for those interested in horse-breeding is always pro vided by the Taieri Society. The district is fortunate in the possession of enthusiastic breeders who have expended money lavishly to procure sofne of the finest blood existing in Scotland, breeders who send their stock to compete with other brooders from one end of the dominion to the other, and so materially increase the number of clients who patronise their horses and purchase their young stock. The steady progress of the society is largely due to the unrivalled classes of young Clydesdale horses which annually appear at its show, and it is a gratifying tribute to the eminently useful part the Taieri breeders have played in the history of the Clydesdale horse of the dominion. As usual, the biggest crowd of visitors lined the ring where the Clydesdale horses were fudged, and among the spectators wore many breeders from other districts who know a good animal when they see one and arc not slow to criticise any defects noticeable. There appeared to be no decline in the quality of the exhibits, and in many cases there was little to choose between the prizetakers. Few really poor animals were to be seen. With the best quality and blood in the country available at hand for use without the expense of railing, shipping, or grazing, Taieri farmers undoubtedly enjoy exceptional opportunities for the breeding of Clydesdale horses. Among the familiar names figuring prominently in the Clydesdale prize lists were Messrs J. Patrick, J. W. Blair, Thomson and Co., J. Callander, and W. J. Charters. As everyone expected, Mr Patrick’s Baron Bold was again adjudged the champion draught entire on the ground Second place wes awarded Mr Chartcrs’s St. Simon. The champion draught mare was Mr Patrick’s Maggie Young, with Mr Blair’s Eileen runner-up. The colonial-bred mares included Mr Callander’s Maggie Lauder, which he has shown now for a great number of years, hardly over failing to secure a good place. The display of sheep was marred to some extent by the floods of the past season, and even those that were entered were not in such good condition as otherwise they might have boon. Nevertheless some very good Border Lcicesters were exhibited from the flocks of Messrs W. Grey, of Milburn, and J. H. Allan. Mr Alfanj; were hardly brought out well enough for show purposes, and Mr Grey practically scooped the pool, winning the Mosgiel Woollen Company’s rug for most i>oints. The cattle exhibits were small in number, but included a few very nice cows. The Waitaki Dairy Company's prizes for the most-points in four of the classes for cows fell to Messrs John Bathgate and Walter Blackie. There was satisfactory competition in the dog section; but only one .of the five entries of swine was forward. The judging of the horses took a long time, and the jumping and trotting competitions, which always create so much interest, were not reached till about half-past 4. The ladies’ jumping contest had to be cancelled. Throughout the day the proceedings were not a little brightened by the stirring music of the reconstituted Taieri Pipe Band, under Bandmaster J. Macgrcgor. The band was making its first public appearance, and stuck pluckily to its task despite the weather. Much credit for the success of the show and for the smooth running of its innumerable details is duo to the secretary, Mr W. E. M’Lean, and to other loss prominent ofiiciuls, to whom also the press representatives are indebted for much courteous assistance. The following is the prize-list: CATTLE. Shorthorn. Judge: Mr J.
