DUNEDIN BURNS CLUB.
A MUSICAL EVENING. The popular monthly gathering of tho Dunedin Burns Club was held in the Early Settlors’ Hall on the 19th inst., and, as a usually the case with these meetings, the seating capacity of the building was taxed to its limit. The programme made no departure from the accustomed lines, and the items were of a national typo and characteristic of the country that gave birth to the great poet whose memory the club is designed to perpetuate. Solos, duets, and humorous items made up the bulk of the programme, and as the performers are all well-known in musical circles, the quality of tho entertainment was guaranteed. A number of part songs were rendered by the Burns Club Choir, conductorship of Mr J. Paterson, and formed most acceptable contributions to the evening’s entertainment. The audience was most enthusiastic, and each of the singers was loudly applauded, while encores were insistently demanded in a number of instances. Mr John Loudon (president of tho club) occupied the chair. He apologised for tho absence of a speaker from the evening’s programme. Arrangements had been made to have one present, but at the last minute it was found to be impossible. Mr Loudon referred with great gratification to the success attained by tho Hallowe’en concert, which, he stated, had well repaid the efforts that had been put into it. On January 25 it was hoped to hold an anniversary concert, and a splendid programme had been arranged for the occasion. A half-promise had been obtained from the Hon. Mr Massey to be present, but it was not quite certain whether ho would be there. A collection was taken up in aid of the scholarship fund that is provided by the club for the support of a training college student at the University, and realised tho satisfactory sum of £6 3s.
