MOVEMENTS OF OCEAN-GOING STEAMERS. The Kaipara, from Liverpool (September 20), via Sydney, arrived at Auckland on the 19th inst. The Turakina, from London (October 8), arrived at Port Chalmers on the 21st inst., and sailed for Timaru on the 23rd, when after discharging portion of her cargo, she will return to Dunedin to further discharge Dunedin cargo. The Whakatano, from Montreal, arrived at Melbourne on the 22nd inst., en route to Now Zealand ports. The Indrapura, from London, arrived at Melbourne on the 24th inst., en route to New Zealand ports. The Athenic left Wellington for London on the 18th inst. The Arawa, from London (October 11), loft Hobart on the 21st inst. en route to Now Zealand ports. ' After several weeks of inaction the arrival of a direct Homo steamer has become quite an event, consequently there was a goodly crowd on the George street pier, Port Chalmers, when the New Zealand Shipping Company’s liner Turakina came up the harbour on Friday morning from London direct. She came right up to the wharf, and as soon as she was fast Dr Hodges, health officer, went on lioard to examine all hands. All being W'ell on board the Turakina eho was granted pratique, and shortly afterwards her passengers began to come ashore to have a look at their new surroundings. 30 for Dunedin direct. The voyago wai. entirely uneventful, and the weather was favourable throughout, with the exception of several wot days. The Royal Artillery Band was amongst the passengers, who were favoured with choice musio almost daily, and several orchestra! concerts were also given by the band during the voyage, which proved a very .pleasant one indeed. The Turakina brought 22 saloon passengers in addition to the 46 rren comprising the band, besides 102 third class passensei's for all ports. Her live stock included several dogs, six red deer hinds and one stag for Dunedin, a pair of polled Angus bulls for Murray, Roberts and Co., and four pigs for Pyn® and Co., Christchurch. The health of all on board was excellent during the trip, which was completed witaout any untoward event of any description. Captain V. C. White-Parsons is still in command of the '3'urakina., and has associated with him the following officers:—Mr S. W. Vine (chief), Mr P. J. Ballard (second), Mr W. Murphy (third). Mr d. H, Thomas (fourth). Mr E. G W cotton k in charge of the engine department,' hl« assistants being Mr I). Corbett (second), Mr A. K. Wilson (third), Mr J. Slater (fourth), Mr W. Getnmell (fifth), Mr J. R. Jeffery (sixth). Mr R. Good is in charge of the refrigerating machinery, hi» assistant being Mr F. Batlcy. and Mr F. R. Harvey is electrician. Mr W. PouUford is wireless operator, and Mr G. W. Fraser steward in charge. Dr W. R. Redman. M.R.C.S., L.M. (of Picton), ia ship’s surgeon. The Turakina brought 5100 tons of general cargo for Dunedin, the remainder of her cargo being consigned to Timaru and Lvttelton. The vessel will remain *4 Port Chalmers in the meantime, owing to the strike.
