, Swaggers are plentiful in the Wairara.pa at present. No doubt they are men driven from Wellington by the strike. During & heavy snowstorm lately the monies of St. Bernard’s monastery saw a dense black cloud of emigrating swallows approach. Immediately all the windows of the monastery were opened, and a few moments later halls and cells were filled with thousands of the half frozen birds. There the little travellers spent the night in safety, and when the dawn broke calm and clear next morning they flew through the open windows and set out once more on their long journey to the south.
