Tho gold and silver fish sent by the Japanese Government to tho Auckland Exhibition suffered severely in transit, no fewer than 520 out of a shipment of 600 dying on the voyage from Japan to Sydney, and eight died out of tho remaining portion on the .trip from Sydney to Auckland. Newts and tortoises, sent from Japan, have fared hotter, but they arrived at Auckland somewhat out of condition. Particulars which are now available show that already 100 miles of track formation in connection with the Australian transcontinental railway has been laid down—6o miles in Western Australia and 40 at the Port Augusta end. From Kalgoorlio 5 miles 62 chains of rails have been placed in position for tho main line, while the ribbon of steel stretches out juat 33 miles at the South Australian end.
