There is some demand for sheep of good quality, but these arc really not procurable. Generally speaking, however, there is dess eagerness to buy until the strike is ended, a feeling of uncertainty prevailing as to getting wool and mutton a.way in tire present position. A few failingmouthed ewes, with lambs, have been sold at 12s 9d, all counted. The sale is also reported of 2500 hill lambs, for January delivery, at 12s. There is a strong inquiry for store cattle, especially for transfer south, but there are none obtainable, the district having been pretty well cleaned out. SOUTHLAND STOCK MARKET. (From Ocr Own Correspondent.) INVERCARGILL, November 21. A fair amount of business in stock has been done throughout the week. The only public sale of importance was that of Wallacetown on Tuesday, the yarding of fat stock and store cattle being on the largo side, and a *g°°J number of pens of really first class bullocks, and also a good proportion of cows, being yarded. A number of butchers had filled their requirements both for cattle and sheep from outside, and as a consequence, and in the absence also of country butchers, the demand was not nearly up to the .yarding, and prices receded, from those of a fortnight ago, when good ox beef readily fetched 35s to 355. The lines offered on Tiicsday did not realise more than 53s to 55s 6d. Good heifer beef showed an even more marked decline, and in many cases good fresh cows realised only 25s to 26s per 1001 b. The sale opened very draggy, the first two pens not being sold, but from the middle to the finish butchers fortunately were a little keener,. and prices showed an advance of 10s per head on the opening rates. There was an extra large entry of fat sheep, among the entry being some pens of really fine heavy stock. A few pens of extra prime shorn wethers were also yarded. The bidding in this section Mas very erratic indeed. Best wethers made up to 30s 6d. and others 29s to 29s 6d. and some pens of fairly good ewes and wethers sold at from 18s to 22s 6d. While on the best classes of sheep the decline was only 6 to 9d per head on the rates of previous sales, unfinished and light sheep, failing* owes, and wethers showed in some cases a fall of from 3s to 3s 6d on the prices of a fortnight ago. As to cattle, the sale improved considerably towards the finish, and prices were much better than the opening rates. There was an extra largo yarding of store cattle, one of the largest yarding in this section seen at Wallacetown for a long time. The demand was very slack, and consequently prices receded considerably. Good forward bullocks were the only class saleable, and while this class was practically as firm as at the preceding sale, unfinished, small, and ill-bred young sorts showed a decline of fully 10s to 15s per head. A little "business has been done in store sheep, and a fairly good demand continues, but the quantity offering is very limited, and anything for sale is eagerly picked up at firm rates. Hoggets, good sorts, are easily bringing £1 per head, while old ewes, with a decent percentage of lambs, are easily sold at from 13s to 12s 6d, all counted. . The business doing in dairy cows is slight. Two or three months of the dairying season being over, the demand has slackened off considerably. Friers may be quoted:—Fat cattle: Ox beef, prime, 33s to 33s 6d; unfinished, 31s 6d to 325; prime heifer beef. 29s to 30s; unfinished and cow beef, 26s to 28s.
