NEW YORK RIVER PIRATES

NEW YORK, November 13

An extraordinary battle took place between a force of detectives and a gang of river pirates under the Brooklyn bridge.

Wholesale thefts on the waterfront having been reported to the police, the detectives concealed themselves in barges, which overtook some motor boats that were laden with stolen coffee. They ordered the occupants to surrender, but the latter replied with revolver shots. The detectives returned the fire, but all of them were badly wounded. The thieves, however, surrendered. The police believe that they have stopped the operations of a gang whose depredations have extended over many years.
