NEED FOR TOWN PLANNING.
CONFERENCE OF LOCAL BODIES. A conference of representatives of the local bodies of Dunedin and suburbs, convened by the Mayor at the instance of the Bay Town Board was hold in the Town Hall on the 14th inst., for the purpose of discussing the question of town planning and the position of local bodies in regard to subdivision of areas under their control. The local bodies were each represented by two delegates, and representatives from the Green Island Borough Council were also present. 'J he Mayor (Mr W. Downie Stewart) briefly outlined the purpose of the conference. He understood that the principal object of the Bay Town Board in .bringing the matter forward tvaa to advocate and bring about the controlling, by the public bodies concerned, of any now subdivisions in the borough surrounding Dunedin. Mr W. D. M'Carthy spoke at some length on iiio necessity for setting up a town-planning board. He thought thebe to see that all work done was, its far as possible, made to fit in with one definite plan for the whole of Greater Dunedin. Or Shaddock supported the formation of a town-planning board, but he thought it should be backed by further legislation. Other speakers intimated that they were in favour of the proposal, and after un informal discussion the following resolutions were unanimously adopted:—(l) “ That it bo a recommendation to the local bodies of Dunedin and suburbs to set up u board, whose function shall be to peruse and pass all plans for subdivision within the area under their control”; (2) “That, pending the setting up of a subdivision board, it be n recommendation to the local bodies of Dunedin and suburbs to submit any proposed subdivision plans to the city engineer and drainage engineer for their advice.”
