THE SONGS THAT ARE SUNG BY THE GIRLS.
There are songs that are sung by the singers Who sing in the music halls, And songs that are sung by the patriots When the voice of a nation calls; There are songs that are sung by the balladists When our Southern flag unfurls; But, O, for the sweet old melodies. And the songs that aro sung by the girls. There are songs that are sung by the singers Who sing in the lighted bars, And songs that are sung by the campers When camping out under the stars; There are songs that are sung by the smokers As the thin white smoke upcurls— But give me the songs that mother sang— The songs that are sung by the girls. And the sad old tune Kate is singing— My sweetheart’s favourite song— Drifts over the lake in the twilight When the summer ev'nings are long; I have heard it sung often by many Out here in the purple West, And I may be unjust to the others. But I think that “the Girl” sings it best. — E. L. Evre. Tui street, Devonport, Auckland.
