CHESS.

CHESS MATCH. OTAGO Y. OAMARU. On Saturday afternoon four motor cars containing 14 members of the Otago Chess Club and three ladies, left Dunedin for Oamaru to play the annual return match. Unfortunately one of the oars, containing Messrs S. S. Myers (captain), W, H. Allen, W. J. Owen, and W. G. Stenhousc, had a disastrous run of bad luck with punctures, and was unable to get further than Hampden. The members of the Otago Club were somewhat disheartened with the non-ap-pearance of their captain, and the match was robbed of some of its interest. It resulted in the Oamaru Club gaining a popular verdict by four games. During the supper adjournment Mr J. P. Malcolm (president of the Oamaru Club) welcomed the visitors, and expressed plc-vasnre at seeing the visiting team in Oamaru. He regretted very much, and so did all his team, that Mr Myers had not been able to bo present. Mr D. Harris Hastings (vice-president of the Otago Club) responded in his usual efficient style Following are the details of the scores, the Otago players’ names being placed first: — O. Balk 0 J. B. Dunlop ... 1 J. Lang 0 W. A. S. Willoox 1 J. Paterson ... 0 D. L. Patterson ... 1 G. D. Wright ... 0 W. Burms 1 J. Crow 1 C. Banks 0 L. D. Coombs ... 1 F. J. Brooker ... 1 J. J. Marlow ... 1 A.
