THE MAYFIELD TRAGEDY.
HEALTH OF THE ACCUSED. CHRISTCHURCH, November 7. It was rumoured in town to-day that i Biddle, who is in gaol awaiting trial on the charge of the murder of Mrs Lilley at Maylield, was at the point of death. Enquiries made at Lyttelton Gaol this afternoon proved that there were no grounds ■ for the rumour. j Biddle was seen in the exercise yard. ‘ He seemed to have little control of his j legs and arms, and was being assisted by ; two other prisoners. The gaoler stated i that Biddle was gaining strength every ; day, and had greatly improved in health | since he had been sent to gaol. He had I just been seen by the gaol surgeon, who | had reported that he was doing well. Biddle is still suffering from the effects of poisons taken in the Hinds riverbed. The poison is, however, gradually working out of his system, and he is eating.
