OWAKA COMPETITIONS.

On the 17th and 18th inst. elocutionary competitions were held in Uwaka, under the auspices of the Ovvaka Men’s Literary and Debating Institute. The weather on both days was rather unsettled, but nevertheless the competitions wore well attended, considerable interest having been aroused in them in the Gatlins district. There was a total entry of 166, which is very good for a young society in such a scattered district. The first prize in each case was a gold medal, and the second a silver medal. The decisions of the judge (Mr'T. N. Do Spong, Dunedin) were received with general satisfaction. Following are the results; — Finsx Day. Recitation, .“The Three Fishers” (for ladies over 16 "years). Six entries—Mies M. Fuchs 1, Miss C. Anderson 2. Recitation, “Little Boy Blue” (for children under 11 years). Thirty-one entries — R. Poultney 1, A. Eyre 2, F. Cheyne 3. Impromptu Speech, “ His Majesty the Baby ” (for gentlemen over 16 years). Nino entries—W. H. Batchelor 1, S. G. Paterson 2. Prepared Reading. “ The Death of Minnehaha” (for ladies over 16 years). Five entries—Miss I. Wright and Miss B. Woodhouse (equal; 1. M:ss G. Latin, 3. Recitation, own selection (for gentlemen over 16 voars). Fifteen entries —Mr W. H. Halley T, Mr A, E. Sanders 2. Second Day. Prepared Reading, “ David Copperficld and the Waiter ” (for children over 11 years). Twenty-three entries—Kathleen M‘Latchio 1, Milton Latta 2. Recitation, “The Torch of Life” (for children over 11 years). .Seventeen entries—Kathleen M‘Latch io 1. Alexander Craigie 2. Children’s Essay, “The Spring.” Twentyseven entries —Ada Johnston 1, Christina. Harris 2. Recitation, “ The Burial of Sir John Moore ” (for gentlemen over 16 years). Eleven entries—W. H. Halley 1, L. Gee 2. Recitation, own selection (for ladies over 16 years). Twelve entries—Miss F. Shaw 1. Miss M. Fuchs 2. Oration (for gentlemen over 15 years). Ton entries—Mr F. H. Wilson 1.
