FIRES.

AUCKLAND, October 21, A fire occurred about 3 o’clock this morning in Onchunga in a house owned by Mr Adam Jones and occupied by Mr Ilopkinson, blacksmith. Mr Hopkinson. was not at home, having loft three days ago for Now Plymouth. A neighbour was sleeping in the house with three of her own children and two of Mr Hopkinson’a. The inmates just managed to escape from the burning building in their night attire. The house was badly damaged and the furniture was destroyed. The house was insured for £230, the wash-house for £3O, and the furniture for £IOO, in the Royal office. October 25. This afternoon a fire was discovered in a six-roomed house in Mount Eden, owned and occupied by Mrs Myra Lodge-. The neighbours, seeing smoke, gave the alarm, but the house, with practically all its contents, was ablaze throughout, and was soon reduced to a smouldering heap of ruins. The origin of the outbreak is unknown. The building was insured in the Phoenix office for £<so, but there was no insurance on the contents, which were valued at £350. October 27. Two buildings at Papatoitoi, owned by Mr J. O. Buckland, were burned this mgA fire on the Haurnki Plains did considerable damage to some unoccupied sections. October 29. A fire at Apia, Samoa, on October 17, destroyed the Central Hotel and Huck’s store. Ernest Larsen and Co. lest their stock, valued at £7OOO. The absence of wind averted the destruction of the whole of the business part of the town. HAMILTON, November 3. The Strath ray Boarding-house was burned down. It was insured for £{so. The Whatawhata Post Office and Store were burned down yesterday morning. Everything was destroyed. The insurance* amounted to £750.
