RACING IN AUSTRALIA V.R.C. SPRING MEETING. First Day—Saturday, November 1. The experience on the opening day of the V.R.C. spring meeting proved the club’s wisdom and foresight in extending the accommodation. Although the new stand and the alterations in the weighing enclosure gave much more room for the public, all the seating accommodation was taxed to the utmost, and the betting ring was congested, proving, as with the other States, that the racing crowds are extending. Yesterday proved to be the biggest Derby day on record, and the idea! weather brought out a sumptuous display of feminine adornment. Altogether it was the most brilliant opening day yet experienced. The programme produced some sterling contests. Mr Scobio won the Maiden Plate last year with Moe. and ho repeated his success this year with Mint Sauce, beating the imported Larjlle, to whom the Sydney crowd attached a warm allegiance. The classic two-year-old event was ane of the weakest of t(ie day. the brilliant Traquctte winning in hollow fashion in time equalling Beragoon’s performance last vear. The Ilotham Handicap was the third successive race to bring out nine runners. Matoureo was in good condition, and was expected to annex the race, but Gladwyn. who ran well in the Caulfield Cup, but who failed to run up to expectations at. Moonoc Valley, beat Hallowmas home after a prolonged and exciting struggle. The Derby field was the smallest since 1907, hut the raw nroved exciting and enjoyable. The Victorians would not have Andelosia’s Svdney running ns his true form, supporting Andeloeia, while the Sydney visitors maintained that Boragoon was the best three-year-old of the season. Owing to Eubulus’a fast run a mile from homo the race established a record, being

a-quaitor of a second faster than Aiawa’s time. Andelosia fought desperately with Ulva’s Isle for third place. Contrary to expectation, Mr Connolly started both his itorscs in the weight-tor-age event. Killorn, who will ride Sea Prince on Tuesday, rode a brilliant race on Anna Carlovna, cutting down Mountain Princess at the distance. The latter, however, had made her own running, or she would have won. Pike says that Beragoon went even better than he did in Sydney, although his track work did not indicate any improvement. This is Pike’s third Derby win, and it was well received in tho jockeys’ room, while Pike was loudly cheered by the public. The following are the results: MAIDEN PLATE. Describing the Derby, the Herald says:— “ A splendid start was effected. Determined that it should bo a true-run race, Pike quickly sent Beragoon to the front. Taking up a position bn the rails, and making the pace very solid, he the way out of the straight and along the riverside. As they neared the bridge Eubulus shot through and opened up a gap of five lengths along the back stretch from Radnor,

Beragoon, and Andelosia. Eubulus maintained this advantage past the abattoirs, but had faded out of the fighting line a little further on. Ulva’S Isle gradually improved his position and ranged up alongside Beragoon and Radnor, who swept into the home stretch just clear of Andelosia and Ulva’s Isle; but ere the distance was reached Bike called upon Beragoon, who responded with characteristic gamcness, silencing all opposition, and in a few strides he came away and won with ease. There was a most exciting encounter between Andelosia and Ulva’s Isle for third place. The Daily Telegraph says; —“Fortunately the race was truly run, and no excuse can bo admitted for the defeated candidates. Though not actually the first to move, Beragoon quickly went to the front, to give way on the far aide to Eubulus, who at once commenced to make the pace a cracker. Six furlongs from home the field were running in Indian file, with Eubulus five lengths in front of Radnor and Beragoon. When fairly in the straight Beragoon and Radnor were in charge, with Andelosia and Ulva’s Isle next. The excitement was intense' in anticipation of a bitter battle between the co-favourites, but tho hopes of Radnor’s followers were soon shattered. In the short, sharp set-to Beragoon quickly doubled Radnor up. Pike was not disposed to let Beragoon slow down, and forcing him along ho ran home a wmner by four lengths. It was a gallant victory, and clearly stamps the winner as tho best- of his age.’’ RACING IN BRISBANE. BRISBANE, November 1. A large number of horses were given easy work. WAIKOUAITI RACING CLUB. {From Our Own Correspondent.) WAIKOUAITI, November 3. The annual meeting of the Waikouaiti Racing Club was heJd on Saturday evening in the Public Hall. Mr A. S. Orbell (president) occupied the chair, and there was a largo attendance of members. The balance sheet presented by the treasurer showed the receipts for the year to have been £1475 Is 8d (including a bunk balance of £126 11s 2d from the previous year), and the expenditure £1319 14s 2d, leaving a credit balance of £155 7s 6d.

In moving the adoption of the balance sheet the Chairman congratulated members on the very satisfactory state of the club’s finances. Ho pointed out that over £4OO had been spent during the year on improvements- to the course, and as this expense would not be recurring, there would in all probability bo a much larger profit at the close of the present season. The club was now in a strong position, and the •uitlook was most promising. The balance sheet was unanimously adopted. The retiring secretary (Mr R. Templeton) intimated that owing to pressure of business he would be unable to retain the position of secretary of the club. He had filled the position for 25 years, and ho thanked members for the consideration shown him during that time, and wished the club every success. He would always be willing to advise the new secretary and assist him in every possible way. The following officers were elected for the ensuing yespr:—President, Mr A. S. Orbell; vice-presidents —Messrs P. Byrne, J. M‘Gill, P. Toomcy, K. Templeton; secretary, Mr G. E. Charlton; treasurer, Mr James M'Gill; judge, Mr R. Templeton; handicappor, Mr H. J. Gourley; starter, Mr R. Harley; clerk of scales, Mr MByrne: clerk of course, Mr G. Carling.

The stakes were increased from £SOO to a total of £6OO, the chief events being the Waikouaiti Cup of £llO, the Howksbury Handicap of £BO, and the New Year Trot of £9O. It was decided to hold the next race meeting on New Year’s Day, and to have tho programme printed and issued immediately. OTAGO HUNT, Though the Otago Hunt lias finished its season, it has not allowed its keenness in the sport to diminish. After tho success of the steeplechase meeting at Wingatui it decided, if possible, to further increase the following. Backed up by the idea, that a branch might bo formed in the Taiori, with headquarters at Mosgiel, a number of the Dunedin executive journeyed there and met those interested. The meeting was held at Mr Mathieson’s Hotel, and, though there was not a large gathering, those who were present were enthusiastic. Mr B. S. Irwin (vice-president of the hunt) was voted to the chair. Ho explained at length the objects of the club, referring to the difficulties that had to be encountered in starting a new sport or resuscitating an old one. A short discussion followed, and Mr Irwin explained all the questions asked. Mr Jarvis then moved—“ That a branch of the Otago Hunt be formed in the Taieri, with headquarters at Mosgiel.”—Mr Irvine seconded tho motion, which was carried unanimously. Mr J. S. Smcaton moved that a committee bo formed to canvass the district for members, and later to call a meeting to
