THE KRUPP SCANDALS

BEELIN, October 28

During the trial' of Brandt and Eccius, directors of Krupp’s factory, a sensational feature was the testimony of Von Metsen, formerly Krupp’s representative in Berlin, who is himself prosecuting the firm for dismissing him. He asserted that he possessed correspondence with Krupp’s directors showing that many of them were aware of his system of obtaining confidential information.

October 30.

The trial of Brandt and Eccius, directors at Krupp’s works, has been resumed. Counsel stated that the correspondence seized at Von Metzen’s residence contained secret military information, which, if publicly read, might result in endless harm. There were also matters touching the military secrets of foreign Powers, including the members of the Triple Alliance.

Von Metzen, in the course of his evidence, said that Eccius and other directors of Krupps were aware from 1909 of Brandt’s dealings with subordinate Government officials in order to obtain information as to contracts. He had warned the directors that they were sitting on a, powder barrel, which one of these days would blow the whole of Krupp’s business skywards.
