The official inquiry into the destruction in midair of the Zeppelin airship L2 attributes the explosion to the creation of a partial vacuum in the forward car by means of a wind screen eddy behind the screen, which sucked up the escaped gas beneath the airship into the car, where a spark from the motor ignited it. FLIGHT AT AVONDALE. AUCKLAND, October 28. The aeroplane owned by Messrs Miller and Sandford, with the latter as pilot, flew to a height of 450 ft at Avondale today, and in a circular flight covered about five miles. The pilot returned to the starting-point, and alighted safely.
