BUTTER v. MARGARINE.
IMPORTANT CONFERENCE. LONDON, October 22. The Hon. T. Mackenzie presided at tho Margarine -Conference. Captain Collins and the A gents-general and 40 representatives of the dairying interests were present. The proceedings were secret. It is understood that the conference negatived a proposal for margarine being sold in separate compartments or counters, and that it was resolved to form a deputation to the Imperial Government to secure legislation to prevent artificial colouring. October 23. The leading margarine merchants, when interviewed, said they viewed the conference’s decision imperturbably. They stated that Mr Runciman had refused legislation on the occasion of a previous deputation, owing to the tremendous sale amongst the poorer classes, but they had strongly protested.
