THE TYRONE.
SALVAGING THE CARGO. Advantage was taken of the more favourable weather conditions prevailing in the vicinity of the wrecked Tyrone on Monday to bring off the first consignment of salvaged cargo. This consisted of about 30 tons of goods, comprising about 1000 cases of whisky and several tanks filled with crockery. Tho cargo was loaded on tho punt Matariki, which was then taken in tow by two launches and brought on to tho
Dunedin wharf, arriving here about 5 o’clock. Some of those engaged upon tho salvage operations had a rather unpleasant experience while blasting away some obstructioi*; that interfered with their work. One of tho boats that was being used was just leaving the vessel's side when she was struck by a big wave and capsized, throwing the occupants into the water. They were speedily rescued by some other members of the party, who threw them lines from the vessel and drew them aboard. The insurance offices that held rieUa on
the vessel’e contents which were loaded for ' Dunedin and Bluff are now paying out, the sum concerned being about £20,000. This amount is distributed among the various local offices as follows;—Alliance. £4000; Union of Canton, £3400; Standard, £2800; National, £1700; Royal Exchange, £1500; South British, £1020; British Dominions, £SOO (as yet ascertained, hut possibly twice that sum); United. £455; British and Foreign, £450; New Zealand, ■ £244 ; China Trades, £255; Phcenix, £160; j Victoria, £110; Sea, £27.
