OAMARU, October 27. The Oamaru Trotting Club’s meeting was held to-day under conditions only made disagreeable by a strong wind and dust. The attendance was in the region of 4000, and included a groat number of visitors from both north and south, besides the country districts. The special train from Dunedin was crowded. The racing was good, though in some inrtances a few horses were given allowances that left those at scratch without a chance. There was a big speculative spirit, and the amount put through the totalisator was £9237 10s, as against £6393 for last year’s meeting. The amount might have been greater had not a considerable number of investors been shut out. The events were got off fairly well up to time, and the arrangements, though in some respects of a primitive character, were well carried out. The following are the results: TRIAL HANDICAP (Optional), Of SOsovs. One mile and a-half. Mr J. Conlan’s Hemeti, 15seo (J. O’Brien) 1 Mr J. Smith’s Quinaldino, 15sec (T. Logan) 2 Mrs Malone’s Silvcreau, 12sec (Messervy) 3 Rcdfcrn, M’Vca, Betty Beadon, Windhall, and Miss Satinwood were scratched, leaving a field of thirteen. Hemett showed the way, closely attended by Quinaldine, the pair running close together, and well ahead of the rest. .At the homo turn Hemett drew clear, and finally won by a length, with Quinaldine a dozen lengths behind, and Stanley L, George M‘Kinney, and Waihemo close up in that order. PUKEURI HANDICAP (Optional), Of SOsovs. Two miles. Mr T. Walker’s Pitch Dark, 17seo (Owner) 1 Mr Stewart’s Carl, 17sec (F. Holmes) ... 2 Mr C. Nichol’s King William, 19sec (M. With three-quarters of a mile covered King William held a strong lead, with Carl and Pitch Dark in closest attendance, but the leader broke and lost ground, being passed by Pitch Dark, Carl, and FloradeL A quarter of a mile from home Carl was in front for a few strides, but was challenged by Pitch Dark, who was landed a winner by half a length. King William carnc fast, and was only a neck away from the second horse. Florad’el finished fourth, Truganini fifth, and King V sixth. Time, smin 12 2-sscc. Bonista was in front, with Breeze and Goldwood next in order. The two held their positions for the next round, Music having in the meantime taken fourth position. Nearing the homo turn, Breeze went to the front, followed by Goldwood. The latter made an effort in the straight, but was beaten by two lengths. Bonista eased up, and allowed Music to secure third place Medallion, the scratch horse, finished fifth, a long way behind. Time, 4rain 46seo. Walker) 5 Scratched; Silent Bell, Bryan M., Hemett, Stanley’s Child, George M'KLnnev, Stanley e Pet, Miss Satinwood, and' \VindhalL This left a couple of dozen in the race, but it was the poorest investment event of the day. Black Satin, going well, soon established a strong lead, with Donation second and Little Shamrock third. The leader was never caught, and won easily by a dozen lengths. Donation was done with half a mile from home. Little Shamrock finished a length in advance of Hona Ariki, behind whom came Red Maid and Douglas. REDCASTLE HANDICAP (Saddle), Of 70sovs. One mile and a-half. Mr W. T. Lowe’s Georgie G., ISsec, (G. Stoddart) 1 Mr Rico’s Silent Bell, I6sec (R. M‘Caw) 2 Mr Allington’s Storm Cloud, 18seo (F. Pride of Rothschild and Stanley L. held the leading positions for half the journey, when Imperial Tracey came to the front. ’ At the turn' into tTTe straight 0.8.5. and Alice Huon ran into second and third positions, and a good struggle between the three leaders ensued. Imperial Tracey secured the verdict by two lengths, and a similar distance separated 0.8.5. and Alice Huon. Time, 2min 28sec. "C~X
