(From Our Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, October 23. The report of the Railways Committee on the petition of Mr A. Grandison and 23 others, who asked for an inquiry into the causes of the railway accident at New Lynn in May, was presented to the House. Tlie report read as follows : —“ That, having heard the evidence of the petitioners, the officers of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants and the Locomotive Enginedrivers’, Firemen’s, and Cleaners’ Association, the officers of the department and other witnesses, the committee is of the opinion—(a) that there was a light fog at the time of the collision; (h) that the fog was not of such density as to necessitate the use of fog signals; (c) that Driver Corich was guilty of an error of judgment in not slowing down early enough to avoid over-running the danger signal; (d) that there is no blame attached to Porter Mortimer, who was In charge of the New Lynn station at the time of the collision; (e) that the railway facilities at New Lynn are sufficient lor the safe working of the trains. The Committee recommensd ; |1) That Porter Mortimer be exonerated; (2) that owing to his youth and his not being of ripe experience Driver Corich be reinstated in the service in a lower position for a time. There was no discussion of the report-, which was ordered to lie on the table ap4 to be referred to the Government*
