CHURCH OF ENGLAND
MELBOURNE, October 22,
The Victorian Anglican Synod, by a majority of 123 votes, has conferred the church franchise on women. An amendment of the Assemblies Act was carried, enabling women to obtain the right to vote as lay representatives of the synod. Archbishop Clarke said that this was a great and new departure in church life, and would influence the whole of the community. The Anglican Synod amended the Patronage Act to provide that if parishioners fail to make adequate provision for the maintenance of the church and the clergy of the parish they shall lose the right to nominate an incumbent. The minimum stipend was fixed at £2OO and a house or £250 without a house. CONDITIONS IN ENGLAND. LONDON, October 21. Addressing the Society of the Sacred Mission, Bishop Frodsham, of North Queensland, said that the weakness of the remoter parishes in England was deplorable. Many clergymen did not receive 30s a week, and the cases of clerical poverty were disgraceful to the church, which battened upon the clergy’s private mejns. He recommended the application of the Australian bush brotherhood methods to English rural parishes.
