THE LOYAL TOAST

ATTITUDE OF LABOUR MAYOR

MELBOURNE, September 9,

Mr Gordon Webber, M.L.A., the first Labour candidate to be elected Mayor of Richmond, has aroused some comment by omitting to propose the usual loyal toast at a function which he gave to mark his election to the mayoralty. Mr Webber thus explains his action : “ I omitted the toast because I consider it superfluous. Personally I am a Republican. The King is only a figurehead, and it is only as such that ho is recognised. In saying this I do not consider that T am not a loyal subject.” September 11. In the Assembly Mr Watt’s motion, emphatically condemning the recent disloyal utterances of Mr Webber, was carried on the voices. The motion read : “ That this House consider such statements inconsistent with the oath of allegiance to the King, and declare their unwavering loyalty to the institution of monarchy.” September 15, The honorary magistrates in Richmond have passed a resolution that in view of the disloyal utterances made by the newlyelected Mayor of Richmond (Air Gordon Webber, M.L.A.) in explaining his omission of the usual loyal toast at hie mayoral banquet, they will refuse to occupy the banah with him.
