Ewing, and Mr Fraser, who had entertained him, in conjunction with Mr Barry, whenever opportunity offered. Reverting to the question of the competitions, Mr Allen said tho position of adjudicator was like that of a policeman, a by no means happy one. Ho wanted to tell thorn that ho had given his decisions conscientiously, and' to defeated competitors he would say, “ take heart and try to do better next year.” He congratulated Hie successful competitors, and ho added that there were some very good sports in Dunedin. He said this because in no instance that lie knew of had there been any nasty feeling shown towards him by any competitors when defeated. Mr Allen said that very often a competitor's work became, depreciated, because he or she was nervous, when appearing on the platform. In eon elusion. Mr Allen said that when he carno here first he had boon struck with tho absence of H twang ” about the competitor-:. and had commented upon it, but niter on ho found that it existed, and among children the vowel production was not good in cases, such words *as “ town and “ thou ” being pronounced with distinctly “twangj ” accent.
